A machinery businessman from Taragunia village in Kushtia has developed an alternative fuel for agricultural irrigation using discarded motor oil. Monirul Islam formulates the substitute, termed Method of Alternative Diesel (MAD), by blending chemical boosters with waste lubricants to operate standard diesel engines.
The synthesis combines 5 litres of used motor oil with 100 grams of a proprietary 4-element booster. This specific ratio yields an output functionally equivalent to 7 litres of conventional diesel. Local cultivators Akram Hossain and Omar Ali reported a 70% reduction in overall fuel expenses after deploying the mixture in their shallow irrigation pumps.
Islam began experimenting with internal combustion fuel substitutes in 2007. Daulatpur Upazila Agriculture Officer Rehena Parveen confirmed her department is actively monitoring field trials to detect any potential mechanical degradation or adverse side effects caused by prolonged exposure to the new compound.
While acknowledging the immediate financial benefits, technical specialists advise operational caution pending further data. Jahidul Haque, head of the farm machinery department at Hosenabad Technical School and College, identified the project as an innovative strategy to lower overheads. “But it is not possible to say for sure right now what effect it will have on the engine in the long run,” Haque warned, mandating rigorous scientific evaluation.
Daulatpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Anindya Guha confirmed local administrators will arrange government assistance for the inventor if independent assessments validate the formula. Assessing the immediate agricultural impact, Guha stated, “In the context of the current diesel crisis and power problems, such an invention is very timely and promising.”
