The government has increased the retail prices of diesel, kerosene, octane, and petrol across the country, citing global energy market volatility and escalating import costs. According to a government notification, the revised tariff structure takes effect immediately, pushing domestic fuel prices to a historic high.
Under the new pricing, diesel has been raised by Tk 15 to Tk 115 per litre. The price of octane has increased by Tk 20 to Tk 140 per litre, while petrol is now priced at Tk 135 per litre following a Tk 19 hike. The price of kerosene has also seen an upward revision, rising by Tk 18 to Tk 130 per litre, as per the official directive.
The sudden price adjustment has triggered immediate disruptions in the transport sector. Commuters have alleged that some transport operators are already exacting higher fares, despite the absence of an officially revised fare chart. Analysts warned that the increased transportation costs will inevitably trigger a rise in the prices of essential food items and daily commodities.
To prevent artificial shortages, the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) stated that fuel supplies to filling stations nationwide are being augmented. The state-owned corporation highlighted a significant surge in fuel demand this month, largely driven by the extensive consumption of diesel in both the transport and industrial sectors.
